We know the largest cat breeds are out in the wild. They instill fear in most and their regal appearance demands our respect and awe. As a child, I was always captivated by that distinct power that big cats resonate. A picture of me petting a leopard when I was young, still lives vivid and fresh in my memory- its coat coarse but thick, hiding rippling muscles beneath.
I wished I could take one home, but of course, that would be impossible wouldn’t it?
Well, perhaps not if you were from a time when big cats like tigers were kept in king’s courts as pets or entertainment, but not in this new age when wild cats are nearing extinction due to habitat loss and poaching. So, will the next generations ever know what magnificently marked coats felt like or what a true hunter looked like? Or will they only have fluffy, cute kitty cats to extrapolate from? Are you someone who’s always wanted a piece of the wild in your home, without the fear of a few unfortunate accidents? If you do, perhaps some of the largest breeds today could serve as alternative models to the magnificence of our dwindling wild.
The Mokave Jag cat is the newest breed of exotic wild-like domestic cat breeds. The appearance of the Mokave Jag cat is akin to the Jaguar with coat variations ranging from those of the Jaguar, leopard, lynx and panther. This breed was created by a blend of the bobcat, African Jungle cat and Asian Leopard cat. They have larger, heavier bodies but are agile, with a broader muzzle and nose.

Taking about 3.5-4 years to reach maturity and a lifespan of 17-20 years, they can reach a weight of 12-28 pounds, compared to other domestic cats that weigh 5-12 pounds. But, these giants are indeed gentle and are great family companions.
If the Jag looks a little too bulky in terms of build, you could always opt for the Savannah- yet another domestic-wild cat created by breeding the African Serval with a domestic reed like the bengal. These pretty wild looking cats that jump up to 8 ft high, are very inquisitive and would greet you in excitement with a tail flick!
Perhaps the wild-look is too different for your liking, but for me, these creatures are magnificent. I love the wild, and having a cat that won’t rip me to pieces while looking like its fiercer relatives, is the closest I may get to being in a Savannah or tropical jungle somewhere in the wild outdoors.
